Internet Technology World - Seagate, one of the largest manufacturers of Hard Disk Drives in the world has announced that it would stop the production
of mobile Hard Disk Drives with a spindle speed of 7200rpm by the end
of 2013. The company says that it plans to shift its focus to different
technologies like the solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs). Seagate isn’t
going to completely stop production for mobile Hard Drives as it would continue to manufacture 5400rpm drives.
Announcing the decision by the company, David Burks, director of marketing and product management at Seagate Technology, said,
We are going stop building our notebook 7200rpm hard disk drives at the end of 2013.
[Source: X-bit labs]
This means that by the end of 2013, we
can expect more and more notebooks to ship with Solid State Drives
(SSD’s) instead of Hard Disk Drives. Though the SSDs offer a much faster
performance than HDDs, but they are much expensive as well, especially in storage capacities of 256GB or more.
Mobile hard disk drives with a spindle speed of 7200rpm offer a bit faster performance
as compared to hard drives with 5400rpm, but are still considerably
slower than the relatively new Solid State Drives. Thus more and more
manufacturers have started to use SSDs in Notebooks for the operating system and other important stuff, pairing them with HDDs, for tasks which don’t require much speed.
Seagate has also said that the comany
would launch third generation of Sold State Drives later this year,
which would cater the needs of the customers who demand performance and
capacity.
